Case Study: How & Why ESB Added Welcome Boxes to Their Onboarding Process

Who is ESB?

ESB is one of Ireland’s best-known and most respected brands. Established in 1927, it’s the state-owned energy company with nearly 10,000 employees operating across electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and supply — serving over two million customer accounts in Ireland and Great Britain.

ESB has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This includes growing its renewable energy generation capacity from 1 GW to 5 GW and reducing the carbon intensity of its electricity by two-thirds by 2030 — all while supporting customers through the transition.

The Challenge

To meet its ambitious climate targets, ESB must significantly grow its workforce — in addition to day-to-day hiring. With staff spread across Ireland and the UK, the onboarding team sought a fun, meaningful, and values-driven way to welcome new hires, highlight their sustainability goals, and share company values.

The solution? A custom Welcome Box for every new team member — and they needed a sustainable partner to design, make, store, and deliver these boxes on demand.

The Project

Roody partnered with ESB’s onboarding team to develop a completely custom and sustainable Welcome Box. Each item was branded and aligned with ESB’s identity — all designed with sustainability at the core.

Each box was produced as sustainably as possible — with six trees planted for every box sent.

The feedback has been phenomenal. New hires regularly post about their Welcome Boxes online, and ESB has planted tens of thousands of trees 🌳 — completely transforming the onboarding experience.
